The Willy Street Co-op, designated "Best Place to Work" in 2012 by Madison Magazine, is a natural foods cooperative with retail locations in both Madison and Middleton.  We are looking for a General Merchandise Category Manager, a new position in our Co-op. Our General Merchandise department is comprised of vitamins and supplements, body care, and mercantile (candles, floral, housewares and more).  The General Merchandise Category Manager coordinates the offering and pricing structure for the general merchandise category between our retail stores and is responsible for meeting sales and margin goals as well as retail standards for the general merchandise category. This person will provide the leadership needed to move the organization from an individual store mentality into a multi-store operation, focusing on core brand and core product selection and merchandising.

This is a full time, salaried position, starting at ~$46,010 annually. Desired qualifications include:

  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Minimum of three years of purchasing and merchandising of body-care, supplements, or mercantile, preferably in a natural foods setting
  • Knowledge of natural foods industry and current trends and products in the industry
  • Experience with successful merchandising programs
  • Well-developed negotiation skills
  • Excellent sense of organization and follow-through on commitments.
  • Experience working with price points, sales figures, and margins
  • Excellent communication skills

Customer Service

Customer service is WSGC’s primary focus in providing food, goods, and services to its customers. It is the goal of the staff that all customers are treated in a respectful and courteous manner, paying close attention to their individual needs. This personal care and attention should be directed to all customers to ensure that shopping at the WSGC is as comfortable and satisfying an experience as possible.

  1. Be open and ready to assist customers, fielding their questions, complaints, and requests
  2. Resolve customer complaints in a fair and tactful manner.
  3. Create avenues for communication and achieve results by promoting teamwork and working collaboratively with general merchandise staff and general merchandise management teams.
  4. Support retail general merchandise departments in securing the services they need to achieve expected margin and sales

Product Management

  1. Administer the product standards as established in Willy Street’s Product Policy.
  2. Establish retail prices for all general merchandise products based on applied and achieved margin targets, desired market position, supplier prices and competitive price checks.
  3. Conduct regular store checks at key competitors to compare and evaluate WSGC programs.
  4. Provide input and direction to the Director of Communications regarding specific products / lines / services to promote
  5. Monitor product movement and initiate product mix changes and resets as necessary.
  6. Manage all vendor and distributor relationships. Conduct regular category reviews and manage new and discontinued product process. Drive quality standards and cost efficiencies throughout the distribution and replenishment process. Conduct regular business reviews with key vendors and distributors.
  7. Provide input on product standards and philosophy to the BDT
  8. Work with Purchasing Director on multidepartment/site volume buys
  9. Review margins and set margin goals with department managers, GM and Director of Finance.

Merchandising

  1. Oversee merchandising of general merchandise products
  2. Allocate display and promotional space for new products with decor coordinator and department managers.
  3. Work with decor coordinator, event coordinator and department managers to plan and implement store promotion events and special displays.
  4. Participate in the planning of store layout and product locations for sales volume and stocking efficiency.

Store consistency

  1. Ensure continuity of all general merchandise programs within the stores.
  2. Conduct weekly store visits to monitor product quality standards, merchandising program execution
  3. Review individual site product offerings and determine if it makes sense to add to the central catalog available to all stores
  4. Institute and maintain one clear and defined pricing strategy

Strategic planning

  1. Develop comprehensive business plans for implementing new programs to address changing market conditions, key competition, and department financial performance. Meet department financial goals
  2. Provide sales forecasting. Establish sales targets to meet company objectives.
  3. Coordinate with the Communications department on promoting the departments in general – regularly scheduling active demos, classes, informative in-store signage and advertising
  4. Provide movement tracking between both stores to establish what works and what doesn’t.
  5. Actively seek and implement best retail practices, industry trends and potential new products
  6. Develop and implement approved budgets

Administration

  1. Oversee product related customer comment response
  2. Ensure proper pricing and margins are set in SMS and with FoG for all new and promoted products available centrally
  3. Routinely evaluate margin performance with general merchandise managers and GM.
  4. Ensure submission of monthly Reader articles that pertain to both sites
  5. Meet monthly with General merchandise Managers to review customer, buyer, stocker feedback and vendor information, trends, etc.
  6. Complete timely and accurate reports
  7. Ensure at least weekly posts for social media
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager.
  9. Answer phones as necessary.
  10. Participate in co-worker evaluations.
  11. Orient and be helpful to new employees.
  12. Set a positive example for co-workers.

Qualifications

  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Minimum of three years of purchasing and merchandising for a major department, preferably in a natural foods setting
  • Extensive experience with buying and inventory control
  • Well-developed negotiation skills
  • Knowledge of natural foods industry and current trends and products in the industry
  • Experience with successful merchandising programs
  • Strong working knowledge of SMS and Excel.
  • Experience working with price points, sales figures, and margins.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands.
  • Excellent sense of organization and follow-through on commitments.
  • Ability to develop and maintain mutually respectful relations with customers and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and motivate self and others.
