Founded in 1975, the East End Food Cooperative (EEFC) is Vancouver’s only member-ownedgrocery store. It specializes in meeting the community’s desire for organic, fair trade and locally grown food, welcoming member and non-member shoppers. It is open 12 hours/day, 7 days/week with 21 full- and part-time unionized staff, and with gross annual sales exceeding $2.5 million.

With financial challenges arising from the small scale of the current store, the EEFC Board has identified storefront expansion and modernization as essential measures to realize the EEFC’s unique potential as a thriving, people-driven food co-op. The Board has completed a market assessment and member survey, while rekindling the Co-op’s channels for member engagement.

Over the next two years, the focus will be on improving its management of costs, personnel resources, and marketing strategies, followed by community-driven rebranding and storefront expansion. We are seeking a General Manager with the proven skills, experience, enthusiasm, and capacity for risk-taking to guide the Co-op through this transformation.

This is a Unique Opportunity:

  1. Vancouver is a huge market that is overdue for a significant food co-op presence. The city has seen massive growth in organic, local, and fair trade market, yet this has been largely untapped by the food co-op movement. As the only co-operative grocery store currently operating in the city, our successful store expansion is just the first step in tapping into that market potential.
  2. Our vision of an expanded, thriving food co-op is connecting with the community and we are building an extensive network of support. We have built relationships with local credit unions to provide financial and technical support. We are gaining support and volunteer contributions from experienced leaders from the business, co-op and non-profit sector. And we have connected with outside resources to guide our work and assist with successful execution.
  3. The board is very supportive of expansion and organizational change. We are seeking a leader with entrepreneurial spirit and capacity to lead this transformation.
