The Willy Street Co-op, designated "Best Place to Work" in 2012 by Madison Magazine, is a natural foods cooperative with retail locations in both Madison and Middleton.  We are looking for a Purchasing Director.  The Purchasing Director plans, directs and coordinates the activities of category managers to oversee the selection, pricing and promotion of products to meet the co-op’s objectives for sales growth and margin contribution. This is a full time, salaried position, starting at ~$48,465 annually. Desired qualifications include:

  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Minimum of three years of purchasing and merchandising for a major department, preferably in a natural foods setting
  • Knowledge of natural foods industry and current trends and products in the industry
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents
  • Experience working with price points, sales figures, and margins
  • Strong personnel management skills
  • Excellent communication skills

Job Description: Purchasing Director

   

Reports to:

General Manager

 

Purpose:

Plan, direct, and coordinate the activities of category managers to oversee the selection, pricing, and promotion of products to meet the co-op’s objectives for sales growth and margin contribution.

 

Status:

Salaried, exempt position, 40 hours per week Positions reporting to the Purchasing Director include: • Prepared Foods Director • Grocery Category Manager • Merchandiser • Purchasing Assistant

 

Essential Functions:

   

Customer Service

Customer service is WSGC’s primary focus in providing food, goods, and services to its customers. It is the goal of the staff that all customers are treated in a respectful and courteous manner, paying close attention to their individual needs. This personal care and attention should be directed to all customers to ensure that shopping at the WSGC is as comfortable and satisfying an experience as possible.

  • Be open and ready to assist customers, fielding their questions, complaints, and requests
  • Resolve customer complaints in a fair and tactful manner.
  • Create avenues for communication and achieve results by promoting teamwork and working collaboratively with category and site managers
  • Support category managers in securing the services they need to achieve expected margin and sales
 

Purchasing

  • Act as the category manager for unattended categories
  • Actively seek and implement best practices, industry trends and potential new categories or products
  • Work with category managers to coordinate and execute multi-department and site volume buys, such as special deals and promotions. Ensure adequate and timely supply of promoted products.
  • Ensure participation from all category managers in Willy Street’s ESP program.
  • Approve the addition or deletions of product lines.
  • Ensure participation in NCGA category management
 

Product Mix

  • Coordinate all product offering and pricing structures for all retails. Ensure core branding for WSGC products
  • Work with category managers and Communications Director to determine weekly and monthly promo themes
  • Lead the Brand Development Team
  • Create and oversee the product standards in Willy Street’s Product Policy.
  • Meet with category managers to plan appropriate product mix at each location.
  • Work with category managers to approve product lines, brands, vendors and products.
 

Merchandising

  • Work with Site Managers on determining departmental footprint
  • Oversee resets and placement of categories within a set
  • Recommend department reorganization as necessary
  • Determine product signage content
  • Work with Site Managers to merchandise in common store areas
  • Participate in the planning of store layout and product locations for sales volume and stocking efficiency.
 

Pricing

  • Assume ultimate responsibility for applied pricing/margin
  • Set and enforce the standards in Willy Street’s Pricing Policy.
  • Advise in setting guidelines for competitive pricing and make adjustments when necessary.
 

Personnel

  • Hire, train, evaluate, discipline and supervise Category managers
  • Work with and schedule the Category Managers to ensure that all responsibilities are met. Fill in gaps as needed.
  • Ensure regular meetings with all direct reports
  • Communicate with store managers and department heads to ensure needs are being met.
 

Strategic planning

  • Develop comprehensive business plans for implementing new programs to address changing market conditions, key competition, and organizational financial performance. Meet overall company financial goals including sales and margin achievement
  • Work with GM to Determine desired market position
  • Review product data and make decisions accordingly to meet goals
  • Working with the Director of Finance and GM, set departmental and company-wide sales goals
  • Develops annual sales plan in support of organizational strategy and objectives.
  • Recommends sales strategies for improvement based on market research and competitor analyses.
 

Administration

  • Develop and implement purchasing and contract management instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Resolve vendor or contractor grievances, and claims against suppliers
  • Control purchasing department budgets.
  • Work with the GMT and other department heads to solve problems.
  • Review purchase order contracts for conformance to company policy.
  • Complete timely and accurate reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager.
  • Answer phones as necessary.
  • Participate in co-worker evaluations.
  • Orient and be helpful to new employees.
  • Set a positive example for co-workers.
 

Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising staff.
